What: Fascinating, five-day Texas wildlife camps for youth 13 to 17. Each day is intense, with numerous hands-on activities, both indoors and out, short lectures, and individual and team projects. What you will learn and experience:
- anatomy and biology—learn about birds from the inside out
- population dynamics—telemetry, GPS
- habitat management
- conservation
- entomology
- botany
- ecology
- leadership, teambuilding, and communication skills
Where and when: Private ranches across Texas. Three sessions are specifically about birds (quail or waterfowl):
- Rolling Plains Bobwhite - June 16-20, 2012
- South Texas Bobwhite - June 24-28, 2012
- Waterfowl Brigade - July 22-26, 2012
Why: All you need is a love for birding, nature, and/or the outdoors and a willingness to learn. Discover everything you ever wanted to know (and more) about quail or waterfowl and their habitats. These camps could be described as a very short but intense internship.
How: Learn more and apply at www.texasbrigades.org. Applications are due March 15, 2012. Although most participants are from Texas, anyone can attend.
The Texas Brigades’ mission is to educate and empower youths with leadership skills and knowledge in wildlife, fisheries, and land stewardship to become conservation ambassadors for a sustained natural resource legacy.
