Great evening in Providence

I am sure there will be many posts and photos from today's birding and tonight's banquet on the ABA web site, and I plan to send in a few soon. Just let me whet your appetite to tell you the Stokes' brand new field guide to the birds of North America is a spectacular accomplishment and their talk tonight was great and inspiring.

Another major highlight of the evening was the warm welcoming standing ovation given to Jeff Gordon, who will be our new president very soon. Good things are happening at ABA! 053bc

Heard Only Arnold Small (1926–2000) is on anybody’s short list of birding greats from the latter half of the twentieth century in North America. I never met Small, but I’m certain I would have enjoyed his company. He was witty, opinionated, and fun. I’ve particularly enjoyed his many contributions to Birding magazine....

Why on earth do a big year? Long before I'd even contemplated doing a big year, and was a more "normal" birder (if such is possible), every now and then I'd get a glimmer of why one might want to do such an extreme thing. A long weekend devoted to birding would leave me dragging my feet...
