This week, a group of teens from all over the ABA Area are convening in the ABA's home state of Colorado for the annual Camp Colorado. In addition to ABA staff, we're joined this year by our friends David La Puma and Jeff Bouton representing Leica, who have been generous sponsors of the ABA's young birder programs.
For regular updates on the happenings at Camp Colorado, and undoubtedly more reports following the camp's end, check out The Eyrie, the ABA's young birder blog.
And be sure to check out other upcoming ABA events for young birders, including our 2nd Mid-Atlantic Young Birder Conference in September and Camp Avocet in August.
"This week, a group of teens from all over the ABA Area are convening..."
That's the truth, but it's not the whole truth. The sentence might read: "This week, a group of teens from all over the ABA Area and beyond are convening..." One of the great campers is from South Korea, and she's told us about some fascinating and inspiring work she does for crane conservation in--yes, within--the Korean Demilitarized Zone.

I got to spend parts of two days with Camp Colorado. Here are five favorite memories for me:
1. A funnel cloud just north of Phantom Canyon, Larimer County, Colorado. (And I got a chuckle out of how our Pacific slope campers were evidently more freaked out by thunder and lightning than by an incipient tornado.)
2. A glorious showing of Weidemeyer's admirals, everywhere we went.
3. The almost incomprehensible numbers of hummingbirds attending a complex of feeders in Boulder County, Colorado. We saw hundreds of Broad-tailed Hummingbirds, a couple dozen Rufous Hummingbirds, and a few Calliopes.
4. A ridiculously close-up and cooperative American Six-toed Woodpecker in the Wild Basin section, Boulder County, Colorado, of Rocky Mountain National Park.
5. The spectacle of the highly enthused campers ogling and photographing the woodpecker.

Hey, Camp Coloradoans. I've got eBird checklists entered for Phantom Canyon, Jim Hamm, Wild Basin, and Allenspark--plus some incidental observations along the way. Email me offline, please, if you want me to do the eBird Checklist Share thing with you.
